2005 has finally ended and not a moment to soon. I’ve got the company cut back to a nub and I am trying to get the other stores under control. As Dr. Phil would say, “How is that working for you?” Cost cutting on the my side is easy but a personal affront to everyone else. Hey, one out of two isn’t bad. For what it is worth, without discipline and commitment, cost cutting produces the illusion of profitability. We are going to have to be driven by profit, not thrift. The only way to sustain profitability is to increase revenue. I cannot help but think that instead of commenting on a couple of legitimate businesses, I just described a ponzi scheme.

Great American Land Grab

I attended the council meetings regarding the cities annexation of the property on or adjacent to to the Hwy 11 extension. While the rationale for this process seems to make sense with regard to the property south of I-30 and east of Hwy. 19, there is a large block of property north of I-30 and west of Hwy. 19 also included. it does not make economic sense to bring this block in at this time. By their own admission the city does not expect these properties to develop in the near term. When asked why, the response seemed to be because we can. When asked what the upside is for the property owners their response essentially was, "There is none, since we are not obligated to really do anything in regard to infastructure". The property owners however, are obligated to pay the increased tax burden, but will receive nothing in return by the cities own admission. It appears folks that we are seeing an insideous form of incremental greed. Foisted on an unwitting public because they can.

Downtown Library Remodel on Hold

The city and county have put the remodel of the old library building on hold, citing the expense of remodeling. They have indicated that it would probably be cheaper to build new. It would appear that they have been hoisted by their own petard as the saying goes. Could it be that they ran afoul of their own building codes? Here's hoping that they develope a finer appreciation of the problems they put us thru, any time we try and expand our businesses.
